From the warm Indian ocean at the Durban coastline, to the gorgeous Drakensberg mountain range and bush safaris in Mpumalanga – South Africa has it all: stunning scenery, abundant wildlife and a very colourful people.
I am a Jo’burger, trawling through traffic during the week to my office desk, dodging our notorious taxi drivers at every turn, living in a townhouse complex with 24 hour security and in general just being super vigilant so as not to contribute myself to this country’s frightening crime and road death statistics. Don’t get me wrong, I love staying in the city – there are better job prospects and you are close to shopping malls, good restaurants and entertainment – but during the holidays I join the mass exodus to the prettier, more laid back parts of our country.
My favourite local getaways are:
- Cape Town – Cape Town is famous for Table Mountain, its picturesque seaside towns on the Atlantic seaboard and the expanse of winelands. It has awesome night life, the best restaurants in the country (and possibly the world) and is a haven for nature lovers. I love this place!!!
- Drakensberg – The Drakensberg Mountains make a breathtaking panorama. There are great hiking trails and other outdoor activities, or you could just relax in the beautiful surroundings. The mountains of Champagne Valley will always hold a special place for me because this where my now-husband proposed to me.
- Mpumalanga – This is where the Kruger National Park is situated, you have a good chance of spotting the infamous “Big Five” (but mostly plenty of buck!). Besides the animals, there are also amazing views and waterfalls in the surrounding areas.
I will definitely be posting more in-depth posts about these awesome places!
