Urbanologi is refreshingly different and a welcome presence in Joburg’s food scene. Immediately striking is the space – a cozy yet spacious industrial interior, a brewery, dramatic art and beautiful lighting.
Service is warm and unpretentious. The menu consists of tapas divided into fried, kushiyaki, cured, steamed and frozen
They have a great selection of wines, beers and gins. We had a G&T with Wilderness gin and a beer from the Mad Giant selection. You can do a Mad Giant beer tasting for R10/beer.
We ordered 6 tapas in total, three of them were my favourites.
The first was the the flame roasted sweet potato, buffalo milk labneh and pork crackling – the creamy buffalo milk labneh complemented the sweetness of the sweet potato so well!
The other stand out dish was the apple jalapeno cured octopus and tuna tataki with raw turnip and spicy coriander lime dressing. Great zesty flavours and textures.
I loved the creativity brought to their “frozen” dessert dish of banana-barley malt icecream icecream, a dark beer gateux, dark beer caramel with Mad Giant’s True Grit beer fromage blanc and oats crisp. Not a beer-lover but I appreciated the different textures and tastes of the elements that were combined on the plate.
A nice touch were the True Grit beer jellies they served with the bill 🙂 It is situated in Marshaltown, but don’t fear – plenty of safe and secure parking is available.
