An authentic “Portugreek” restaurant that serves the most flavourful and fresh Portuguese and Greek fusion food resides in Jukskei Park, Johannesburg. The owners, Joe and Koulla, are the most welcoming hosts and both are incredibly passionate about the food they serve!
It’s a cozy restaurant in a quiet shopping centre – as it was a hot afternoon, we had some lovely ice coffees while perusing their extensive menu that included burgers and pizzas along with traditional Greek dishes like Kleftiko and Souvlaki. Joe was on hand to explain the different items on the menu, including what makes each of his dishes so special. He also educated us on the origins of tempura – did you know that tempura was introduced to the Japanese by the Portuguese. Very interesting!

All the ingredients used are fresh and the servings are generous. We started off with a beautifully presented Meze board for the table: Fresh pita accompanied with halloumi, olives and a selction of other dips like taramas and tzatziki.

On to the mains: we shared a succulent piri-piri chicken. The chicken was juicy and marinated in tasty Portuguese spices. It was served with a home-made piri piri sauce that was so delicious (I have asked them to bottle it and sell it!!), some large cut chips, onion rings and a generous portion of fresh Greek Salad.

Hubby also enjoyed a trio of sliders: Pork with pickled cabbage, beef with caramelized onion and feta crumble and spicy roast chicken with houmous and peppadews.

They have a small bakery section in the restaurant, I spied my favourite Portuguese dessert that I had to have – pasteis de nata – pastry with custard filling. We also shared a slice of delectable lemon meringue cake.

We rolled out of there with leftovers…and a promise to be back for Kleftiko Thursdays where they have belly dancing and plate breaking – can’t wait to return!
