I went to Cube earlier this year for my birthday dinner – it continuously tops the best restaurant lists in Johannesburg and I was dying to go.
Firstly – make sure you book way in advance. They have a very fast and user-friendly online booking form on their website- fill in your details and you will hear back from them the next day to confirm your booking. Their menu changes seasonally so check their website for their latest menu.
Secondly, bring your favourite wines! You don’t pay corkage and this is the perfect occasion to take out that bottle of wine you were saving for a special meal. They have wine suggestions on their menus, but if you go in with a good red and white you should be covered. For our red we took a Chocolate Block and for our white a Chardonnay-Pinot Noir.
Thirdly, this experience does not come cheap but its worth the experience! R680 pp for 10 tasting courses.
The restaurant is quite non-descript in its location – I don’t think there is a sign at the front of the restaurant even. The interior decor is elegant in its simplicity and there is a great view of the chefs working their magic in the kitchen. The chefs come out to your table to give a brief description of the elements on the plate and this adds a nice touch to the evening.
Each dish is a work of art, plated with attention to detail and has a variety of flavours, colours and textures that take your tastebuds on a journey! They are very accommodating of dietary requirements and substituted beef with prawns for one of the dishes. Everything was delicious, by the time we got to the main of smoked and cured duck breast I was so full!
But next up were the two dessert courses – my favourite! These dishes were the highlight of my evening.
The only negative thing I have about my evening at Cube was the noise level, which is not anyone’s fault, but I would have enjoyed this fine dining experience if it was in a quieter, romantic setting instead of it having the noise level of a pub!
