When I received vouchers in my Online Tuesday Jozi Launch goodie bag from Urban Grind Roasters for a “Coffee Appreciation Course”, I was not expecting much. I thought that we would just have a cup of coffee and a short talk and tasting – well, I was pleasantly surprised!
We walked into Urban Grind on a Saturday morning for the Coffee Appreciation course and was immediately welcomed by their warm and friendly staff. The beautiful aroma of coffee and the shelves of interesting coffee paraphernalia on display enticed my senses as we made our way to the atrium where we were informed by two of their knowledgeable baristas that we would be taken through a 2.5 hour journey of the coffee bean.
We had a taste of their special house blend coffee – The Judge- honestly the best cappuccino I have ever had as Pardon, the lead barista trainer, introduced us to the green coffee beans we would be roasting, cupping, blending, grinding and tasting. There were beans from different regions like Guatemala, Ethiopia, Kenya and Colombia – each with their distinct flavour and aroma profile.
We roasted each of the green beans in a mini roaster until we heard the first “cracks” from the bean.
Once we had a medium roast we began the process of cupping – savouring the aroma and the taste of the coffee along each part of the palate.
The Ethiopian Limu had a strong sweet honey flavour while the Guatemalan blend had a deep chocolate flavour.
Using the different taste profiles we blended our coffee beans and coarsely ground them – we were then shown the different methods and equipment used to make a perfect cup of coffee.
Hubby did the traditional pour over method using a filter and pourer.
I had an interesting science-experiment looking set up which bubbled the coffee upward through a filter – called a siphon.
We had a taste of our creations and I have to say that my blend was quite awesome
