Hubster recently turned 30 – so to celebrate (beside buying him a ridiculously fancy watch and taking him on a weekend away to a game lodge in Limpopo!) I treated him to lunch at Kream in Pretoria. I had heard great things about this place and as we were passing Pretoria on our way to Limpopo, it was the perfect opportunity to try it out.
The most striking element of Kream, beside the amazing food, is the beautiful decor. It exudes elegance and luxurious spaciousness. There is a magnificent sculpture at its centre with a water feature and numerous paintings and art adorning the walls. We were so enthralled with our surroundings and couldn’t wait to experience the food.
The wait staff and managers were warm, welcoming and efficient. You are served bread with some dips when you arrive, we chose a red blend from the expansive wine list and had the Crispy Fashion Fusion sushi to share as starters. This gourmet sushi was a fashion sandwich filled with fried crab, avocado and mayo – topped with teriyaki sauce. The sushi tasted fresh and delicious – things were off to a good start!!
After our sushi we received a complimentary palate cleanser – a fresh lemon sorbet! What a treat!
I had a lamb shank with garlic mashed potatoes, served with tomato and cumin spiced lentils and a cool, tangy tzatziki that offset the warm, hearty flavours of the meat and lentils. Hubby had springbok shanks with a sweet potato and nutmeg boulangere. I had a taste of his dish – the meat had a lovely sauce but I felt that all the elements on the plate were a bit too overpowering – I preferred my lamb shank! Both dishes had fresh veggies that were cooked to perfection. Portions were sizeable and it was a hearty feast.
The highlight of my meal at Kream, however, was undoubtedly the dessert. It was as if experiencing a mini-fun fare on your plate… and your palette. There was a decadently creamy rainbow cheesecake, with bubblegum gelato, candy floss, gin and tonic candies and brittle. It was AMAZING!
When the bill came, it was accompanied with choc truffles and we were very impressed that our fine dining experience did not make such a big dent in our pockets either!
If I stayed closer I would definitely make it my regular spot for special occasions!
